First Piece on Roland Garros

Okay, so this is my first ever blog post as a 16-year-old.

Yeah, I have not written anything related to Roland Garros. This tournament is still, of course, interesting. Though I--and many other people--feel some kind of incompleteness to watch the tournament without Justine. She was the Queen of Paris, and her clay court game is one of the grandest in the history of tennis.

Anyway, there have been some surprising results so far on the women's side. Like...the World No. 2 Kim Clijsters, whom many people picked to win the tournament, was ousted in the second round by the 114th-ranked Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands. I watched the match, and I can say that Kim actually had a good chance to win--she lead 5 - 2 in the second set and had match points, but she started to "doubt" herself...and thus Arantxa won the set 7 - 5. In the third set, she barely gave Kim any chance--she won the set 6 - 1. Kim hit 65 unforced errors during the match, which was very unlike her. Arantxa, in my opinion, played well, but not really amazing. If Kim didn't doubt herself out of the blue during the match, she would win for sure. But she did, and it gave Arantxa a lot of confidences. She could see clearly that something troubled Kim, and she managed to take some advantages from that. Overall, Arantxa is a very interesting player to watch, and I sincerely hope she's gonna be big in the future.

And the World No. 1 lost in straight sets to Daniela Hantuchova. In this case, Daniela played brilliantly--I hadn't seen her playing that well in two years, I think--and it was just too much for the World No. 1 to cope. The World No. 1 was shaken, and she didn't hit a winner in the first set! She tried to come back in the second set, but it was too late. Daniela was a bit shaken, but she managed to control herself and win the match 6 - 1, 6 - 3. And thus the Twitter universe was partying, celebrating the loss of the World No. 1 rather than the win of Daniela Hantuchova.

By the way, yesterday Patty Schnyder announced her retirement from professional tennis. I'm not a fan of her, but I like her game--especially her forehand. Even though I'm not a fan it just makes me sad to realize that someone I used to watch playing will never play again. It's a shame that she never reached a Grand Slam final, something she was actually capable of. Her best Grand Slam result came at the 2004 Australian Open when she reached the semifinals (she lost to eventual runner-up Kim Clijsters). "The Grand Slam final is a dream, and it will remain a dream," she said. Patty won 11 singles titles during her career, and her last title came at the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic in Bali, Indonesia, three years ago.

So...I think that's it for today, I'll try to write anything Roland Garros-related some times later. Vous voyez!
